It all started when I received a phone call last week from Julie at the Make-A-Wish organization. She told me she was going to have an event on Monday and wanted to know if I was available to drive the limousine. I told her I would be happy to, and I would gladly donate my time. She explained it was for a young man that wanted to have a professional photographer do a photo shoot.
Julie arranged the schedule and told me she wanted me to show up a few minutes after she arrived at the house. “I want this to be a surprise, so I’m going to ask them if it’s okay if we catch a ride with you,” she said. I told her that sounded fun and was looking forward to meeting this young man and his family.
Julie called me and we organized our timing for meeting at their house. When the young man came out with his Mom, you could tell he was very surprised and happy. I greeted the Mom and Dad, and then told the young man he must be very important because they sent the best limo driver for him. Julie spoke up and said, “He really is the best. We were so lucky to get him to drive for us today!” (See Michael, it’s not just me saying this!)
The young man, his Mom, and Julie got into the limo, and we headed to the photographers’ house. It was so pleasing to listen to them talk as they made plans for the photo shoot. We pulled into the driveway of the photographers’ house. I let them out and met the photographer. She was very nice and friendly, and I could tell she was happy to be part of this young mans’ wish.
After they were done in the studio, the photographer told us she wanted to get some outdoor pictures. I assumed we would go down to the Falls or possibly Tauphus Park. Instead, she had us head out to the City of Iona. “There are some really good spots out there, and it’s a lot easier to find a place to park,” she told us. We parked by the old Iona City building, and it was a perfect backdrop. It was enjoyable to watch as this young man was able to have his wish come true. I had a chance to talk to the Mom and she told me he was a normal, healthy and active kid when he suddenly developed a brain tumor. “After they removed the tumor, he lost his motor skills and it has affected his speech and facial muscles,” she told me. I told her I was so sorry to hear that and how much I admired his strength and positive attitude. “He is always positive and upbeat,” she said. “That’s why I enjoy driving for these type of events. Every recipient I have met are such an example of courage to me,” I told her. “You can just tell he is someone who won’t let anything stand in his way. I’m sure he’s is an inspiration to everyone that knows him,” I said. “He really is. Especially to me,” she told me.
For our last stop, we went over by the city park. As they were getting some more pictures, I watched as a group of young girls about six years old were having baseball practice.. It was so cute to watch them practice. I enjoyed watching the parents and the coaches work with these sweet young kids. It took me back to a time when Shannon and I had watched Cassidy play baseball at this same park when she was that age. It made me happy to think about all the wonderful memories we made with Cassidy together. I will always LOVE AND MISS YOU sweetheart.
