Happy Labor Day 2022
For this week’s story, I just wanted to do a short little story about how Labor Day started and it’s importance in our lives.
Labor Day is an annual celebration of the economic achievements of American workers. The holiday started in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades, picnics and parties. These events are very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for Labor Day. They were to recognize the strength and powerful spirit of the American worker and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.
I think about our country and all the comforts and luxuries we are so very fortunate to have. I think about our houses, business buildings, hospitals, cars, trucks, highways, railroads, and subways just to name a few. I think about what it has taken to make all of this possible, and it helps me realize just how important the labor force in our country is. All of these things and so many, many more are made possible because of them. For the most part, no matter what it is, someone has to make, someone has to maintain it, and someone has to fix it. Another area that is meaningful and significant to me is our agriculture industry. Someone has to grow and harvest it. Someone has to keep their equipment running. Someone has to package and ship it. Someone has to receive it, and stock it.
I would just like to thank all of the hard working men and women in our labor force for everything they do to help us enjoy the lifestyle that we do. I will try and remember this more than just on Labor Day and want all of them to know how much we appreciate everything they do. I hope all of you have a great Labor Day and thanks for reading.

P.S. There is an old joke about someone that was asked what they would do if the farmers went on strike. Their reply was “I’m not worried, I’ll just go to Wal-Mart.”
